Some ammo sights call 9mm ammo just plain "9mm", some ammo is called "9mm Luger". Is there a difference? I just bought a 9mm pistol and want to be sure to purchase the correct ammo.
I have had a Taurus .40 S&W for about a year now with about 600 flawless rounds through it. Like it so much I just bought the same gun in 9mm. No Taurus bashers please.

...thisisit, they are one of the same...other synonyms are 9X19, 9mm NATO, 9X19mm, 9X19 NATO, 9mm Parabellum and 9mm Para.

Kinda like George Foreman's six sons: George, George Jr., George III, George IV, George V and George VI... :)

Yes 9mm & 9mm luger are the same. Anything non-standard 9mm will be marked. like 9mm mak, 9mm kurtz (380), etc.

Handy reference. Generally anything marked 9x19 is 9mm (para, luger). There are pressure variants such as +p, +P+, NATO, etc but they all will chamber in a standard 9x19 pistol - but whether the over pressure rounds are SAFE/UNSAFE depends on the make and model of the pistol.

NOT 9x19:
9x17 is 9mm SHORT, .380 auto, 9mm KURTZ (short in German), a few other names
9x18 is 9mm MAKAROV
9xAnythingThatIsNot19

An interesting tidbit on the 9x19, it is older than the .45 auto - so much for it being the new-fangled thing :). Some silly Europeans call the .45 auto 11.43x23mm. Does that mean the 9mm is .354 auto? ;)

Oh, people will post their personal opinions and observations, but will not bash, here. Great bunch at ElsiePea.

So there is a distinct difference between the two 9mm's. The taper and gap is obvious. So are the manufacturers labeling the ammo correctly? Buy purchasing the Luger ammo with the tapered crimp be better for the 9mm revolver (crimp Jump)and the acp better for semi's? Just looked at 8 different boxes of ammo I have the the 9mm and they all state Luger, except the Freedom remanufacturer whch does not state.
