I'm a lawyer (no rotten vegetables please) - not a "gun law" specialist by any means. Haven't practiced criminal law since I left the prosecutors office in the early 80s. Still, I remember what it was and I have plenty of friends in the field. Having read this whole thread so far, 3 simple observations:
    1. Its much easier to say "keep quiet" than to actually do it... being silent when you feel people want you to say something. Try it. Like anything else, you get better with practice. (A good occasion to practice is when you're negotiating over something)
    2. if you don't already know a good lawyer in this field to have in your wallet or phone, the very best source is..cops. You have LEO buddies. Just ask them who they'd use. They know.
    2. Desert Punisher's long post is 100% solid imo. Worth re-reading, and following as far as you're able should the situation arise. If you can do it, your lawyer will appreciate it. Again, realize its not "natural" and would take self discipline.

I wrote a long blog post after attending a "Self Defense Shooting Aftermath" class taught by an experienced attorney who is also an former army officer. Well worth the read. You can find it here: http://sdcarry.blogspot.com Look for the blog in the label cloud on the home page.

I recall when I was in high school I thought it would be a cool experience to spend the night in the "drunk tank". I never have, but what could I have been thinking.........
