What is the difference between 357 SIG and 357 MAG?
I think the SIG is for Auto-loaders and the MAG is for revlovers. Other than that, what else, and can you shot either one in a revolver?
One more clarification, also what is the difference between 38 S&W and 38 SPL

    Thanks, E

The 357 Remington Magnum was developed decades ago and is essentially a longer 38 Special with more velocity. It is primarily used in revolvers, but there are some semi-autos, like the Desert Eagle, that are made for that caliber. The rim in the straight wall case keeps the shell from going too far into the cylinder. 38 Special ammo fits into a 357 Rem., but not the other way around due to cylinder length.

The 357 SIG is designed for semi-autos and is based on the 40 S&W case necked down to 9mm. The bottle-neck, rimless case is said to increase reliable functioning in semi-autos for feeding and extracting. The larger case capacity allows more powder and higher velocity than the 9mm (Luger, 9x19, Parabellum).

The diameter of the bullets is not the same, but close. The 357 is .357", which makes you wonder why the 38 Special ever got it's name when it's a 36 at best if you round up. The 357 SIG is the same as the 9mm, .355". The ballistics of the 357 SIG are better than it's big brother and larger, heavier bullet of the 40 S&W. The question of real world effectiveness will spawn debates as to which is better. The choice between the 357s would be first do you want a revolver or SA?

Part 2 of your question the difference between the .38 spl and the .38 S&W is similar to that of the .357 and .38 spl. The .38 S&W(long or short) is shorter or really shorter versions of the .38 spl and were designed for late 19th century pocket revolvers. They are also .357 diameter and can be shot in .38 or .357 revolvers. The .38 short and long Colt are NOT .357 ( a little larger but the exact size escapes me) the case diameter is a little larger and will not fit in (or should not fit in) the S&W guns. Since many of the late 19th century guns were, um, junk they might fit wrong size cartridges. I've seen some old .38's that would fit a .357 if it were loaded with a wadcutter and that would not be good for the shooter. The fun thing about .38's is that most of them aren't. The one that is, is the old .36 Navy Colt, most of the rest are either .357 or .40, although the .41 long Colt is .38 (or .39 depending) Newer loadings have made mush out all of the above. Confused yet?

I'll tell you the difference that matters. .357 SIG is a lot harder to come by than .357 MAG. I saw one box of .357 SIG at the fun shop yesterday, but about 30 boxes of .357 MAG in many different flavors.

Sgt 45 you have the dimension difference backwards in regard to the bullet/case diameter of the 38 S&W and 38 Short and Long Colt. The 38S&W has a .359" bullet while the short and long colts are .357. Cartridges of the World is your friend in these kinds of matters.

I knew it was one way or the other, it's been 40 years since I was really up on that stuff. Funny how the memory gets a little fuzzy with time. All of my reference books are in storage as we've been doing a little remodel project (for 4 years ugh). Thanks for the correction.

THE .357 SIG is on sweet round. Ammo can be hard to come by ,but most of the time it is plentiful and is in my area again . To me it is a much better round than the .40 cal and is easier to control for the second shot.
